The Tudor Transformation
Our clients, a young professional couple with two small children and a hound dog, recently bought their forever home in Chestnut Hill. It was an enchanting Tudor with traditional New England charm, but their taste is bold and modern. Our challenge was to marry the traditional features of the home with the clients’ tastes while also creating a functional family home.
Our clients needed an agile living space capable of supporting an active young family while maintaining a level of sophistication suitable for entertaining. Adding to this challenge was uniting classic Tudor architecture with our clients' love of modern design. This intersection of old and new, sturdy and dynamic, defined our focus in designing this home.
We sought to create balance while introducing an element of tension. Using timeless furniture combined with bold art, we created a modern counterpart to the highly traditional Tudor architecture of their home. Classic furniture anchors each room, while bold and modern textiles, art, and rugs balance the ornate woodwork.
Living Room
As the photo below illustrates, the plan for this space was to create an inviting seating area to entertain and relax. Thoughtfully selected and proportionately scaled furniture optimized not only the functionality of this room but the comfort level as well. A beautiful color palette and inviting textures created a casual yet polished living space perfect for family living and entertaining.
The biggest transformation in this room was the fireplace and surrounding wall. By refacing the fireplace in a modern stone from floor to ceiling, we draw the eye up to the beautiful, coffered ceiling maximizing the architectural element and highlighting the tall ceilings. The bold color behind the fireplace ties in the color palette from the rest of the room and allows for contrast with the white porcelain.
A sectional and barrel chairs provide plenty of seating for entertaining, which is important to the couple. The two seats by the fireplace swivel, allowing guests to enjoy the fire or join the conversation with the group.
Den
Movie nights have never been cozier than in this newly furnished den. We maximized every square inch of this small but important space, allowing the whole family to enjoy time together. Comfortable seating, a plush rug, and gorgeous lighting make this room a favorite hang-out spot.
A tall fiddle leaf fig plant adds a pop of green and brings the outdoors in while the built-ins add a beautiful architectural detail that allows for curated accessories to be placed, adding personality and a layer of warmth.
Dining Room
Hosting is effortless in this new dining room. A tall cabinet provides plenty of storage for tucking away dishes and serving essentials, while the sideboard is the perfect serving station for buffets. The gorgeous area rug anchors and defines the dining room and new window treatments add a finishing touch. Comfortable seating invites guests and family alike to linger around the table for hours.
Again, we married bold color against the white paint and wood trim to marry the clients’ taste with the traditional elements of their home.
One of our favorite elements is the cabinet bar disguised as a gorgeous indigo work of art.
Below are two more photos depicting the happy marriage of traditional and modern style, perfect for our modern family to enjoy cozy tv time together, entertaining guests, and wowing them with this amazing staircase below.
All in all, it's comfortable, fashionable, and stands up to the activities of two kids and a dog. Who says traditional can't be transformed into something new?
